Jazz Soul Music: History, Characteristics and Examples
Jazz soul music is a genre of music that emerged in the United States in the 1960s. Jazz soul music combines the rhythmic, harmonic and improvisation features of jazz with the emotional, lyrical and vocal features of soul music. Jazz soul music has enabled jazz to reach a wider audience and at the same time allowed black musicians to express their social and cultural identities.
Looking at the historical development of jazz soul music, it is seen that jazz was divided into different subgenres such as hard bop, cool jazz and modal jazz in the 1950s. In this period, jazz musicians were influenced by classical music, world music, folk music and blues music and started to search for new genres. In the 1960s, jazz music underwent a more radical transformation and experimental and innovative movements such as free jazz, avant-garde jazz and fusion jazz emerged. These movements broke the traditional rules of jazz and changed the structure, form, sound and meaning of the music.
